Production Diary - Prelim Task
Monday 26th/ Tuesday 27th
Over these two days we discussed the music video that we wanted to replicate. By finding a good song it would mean we had better skills to prepare ourselves for the main course work ahead.
Finally we decided on the song Four, Five Seconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. we thought this would be a good choice as it meant all three of us could have an attempt at acting and find out what part of the production that we all enjoy most.
Wednesday 28th
We started to produce the shot plan and focused on when are where we could film them. This lead to us producing the filming timetable and we booked out the gym for Friday morning to make sure it would be available.
Thursday 29th
Pip completed the shot plan and we all made sure we were prepared with all of out props for the filming on Friday morning.
Friday 30th
Today was spent putting the clips together and seeing what worked and what didn't. The editing of the prelim is a very long process and therefore meant we spent Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th completing everything that needed to be adjusted.
Wednesday 5th
Finally the editing was complete and we could export it. We moved onto the paperwork of the project and made sure we had everything complete to guarantee the most marks possible.
Thursday 6Th
This was the due date of all of our research and prelim tasks so we spent it completing our evaluation and completing our checklists.

Representation
Terminology
Voyeurism = The practice of gaining sexual pleasure from watching others when they are naked or engaged in sexual activity. in the case of music video, it would be when people and things are sexualised to make their video more popular.
Male Gaze = The “gaze” is a term that describes how viewers engage with visual media. The gaze refers to how we look at visual representations. These include advertisements, television programs and cinema.
Exhibitionism = A compulsive desire to attract attention to oneself, esp by absurd or exaggerated behaviour or boasting, being sexually provocative.
Raunch Culture = a culture which promotes overtly sexual representations of women, as through the acceptance of pornography, stripping, nudity in advertising, etc, esp when this is encouraged by women
As you can see most of the 'bad' representations are focused towards women and the way they conduct themselves. It is frowned upon to behave in a sexy manner yet without it, no one is interested in the product you are trying to sell.
From women in Burlesque videos to the Gangsta hoe the stereotypes have evolved ever so slightly...
Burlesque Stereotypes:
- Raunchy
- Feather boas
- Corsets
- Young
- Beautiful
- Stockings
Strippers
- Nudity
- Poles
- Saucy underwear
- Heeled shoes
- The open crutch
Music Video Examples:
All on the women have a lot of skin showing, they are seductively looking into the camera and shaking their assets. Being provocative to advertise the music and their image.

Music Video Task - No Rest, Dry the River
In this task we had to analyse what we thought would best suit the song 'No rest' by Dry the River.
My Ideas Where:
- The camera to be following a young girls day( around 20 years of age), as she struggles to be happy after a break up
- It would include snippets of the band in black and white shots/ black and white room
- Set in London so that there is a busy ciaos yet the girl in the video stands out
As a group we discussed some other theories that we had including:
- In a secluded woodland, with the video showing a guy and his girlfriend
- At a beach in the winter, a young girl, flashing back to the happier times
- By a river with nature and goats walking past
- A man/ lead singer walking down the river playing his guitar
Genre Research
Country: This music video included all of the normal conventions of a music video and also stereotypical country icons; the boots, the hats, the airplane hangers and wooden guitars. The genre of the music video matches well with the music making it a successful video.
Metal: Again this music video matches well with the genre. It is a very unconventional video just like the unconventional music which amplifies the music.
Pop: Pop music videos are usually full of colour, fun and vibrant, so that they can appeal to a larger audience. Within the industry, voyeurism is used largely to get a better review. the women are sexualised in the video to highlight Jason Derulo as a confident ladies man.
Rap: These videos usually contain clips of illegal activity as it visualises the lyrics of the song.
What Music Means to Me
In this task we were asked to present what songs had had a meaning to us through out our lives... This is what must means to me, my life and my family:
Carol Vernallis
Her theory is based on four key concepts: narrative, editing, camera movement/ tracking & diegesis.
Narrative
Camera movement/ tracking
In this music video is shows many narrative variations with around 10 different scenes within the video. Also including jump cuts between the scenes showed in the verses. It also includes over 170 different shots to add excitement to the music video.
Narrative
- Mess around with the order of narrative, think about pacing, keep it interesting.
- Makes it interesting if it breaks normal conversions e.g. jump cuts
Camera movement/ tracking
- establishing where you are, master shots, establishing shot, close ups. Making sure these are used throughout.
- Where the music video is set, how they reveal it slowly. In Vernallis terms she expresses that the setting may be seen but the viewer may not know where the setting actually is. for example in Beyoncé's run the world.

Andrew Goodwin and His Features of a Music Video
Goodwin saw a connection between producing a successful music video and the features it contained. these factors were:
1. The Relationship between the lyric and visuals - Illustrates
- Contradicts
- Amplifies
2. Thought Beats: seeing the sounds, their relationship between the visuals and the music.
3. Genre - related styles and iconography present : visuals matching the genre
- looking at it without the music would it fit the genre
4. Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalists: the creation of a star image to promote a recognisable brand image e.g Miley Cyrus appearing crazy to make a new image for herself...
5. Voyeurism - looking at someone at the star in lust
6. Intertextual references to other media texts: making references with other songs, producing similar videos to represent the previous one.

Types of Music Videos; Performance, Narritve, Concept
Performance
Definition: A music video including performance of the artists as part of the video. Focusing on changing the stars image or reputation.
Throughout Miley Cyrus' career she has had many transitions from a sweet young child actor to making her own image in the music industry. The use of the performance video means it introduces her new star portfolio and shows off her new look and style, promoting Miley and her work as a product.
Narrative
Definition: a video that features a visual story that is easy to follow.
By a music video having a narrative theme it means the audience is able to connect to the words of the song and can relate them to a situation. For instance Andra Day's single Rise Up follows the story of a couple of which one is disabled, showing their fight through life and how they will concur things together. The song has very emotional lyrics and the video enables them to be visually described and portrayed.
Concept
Definition: videos based around a single idea, usually unusual or obscure, even surreal for an audience
Sia has created a name for herself by having a unique selling point... her wing and not showing her face. This music video was the first to come out with the young girl dancing and due to the obscurity of it, it soon became very popular. Its individuality give Sia a special identity within the music industry.

Forms and Conventions - What are they?
Forms and conventions refer to the aspects of a product that make it identifiable to its purpose.
For instance, in the case of a music video:
- A video portraying a song
- short shots and quick cuts
- Dance or a narrative story
A music video is commonly released to publicise the artists new and upcoming album release. A good music video will get people talking about the artist and interested in what else they have to offer in their new album. it commonly follows one of the three concepts; narrative, performance or concept as this gives the music video a clear structure to follow.
